Ex-RAF. Ex-Fire Service.
100% Brechin Local.

I served as a Retained Firefighter with Brechin Fire Service and a Royal Air Force Electrical Engineer. I have seen firsthand what happens when electrical systems go wrong.

Cookers draw huge current - 30-40 amps continuously. Wrong cable = overheating = fire risk. I've seen kitchen fires caused by undersized cables and DIY connections. That's why I calculate loads properly and never cut corners on cable sizing.

Why Use A Professional For Cooker Connection?

Cookers look simple to connect, but they're high-power appliances that require proper electrical knowledge. Here is why Brechin homeowners call us.

Fire
Safety

Undersized cables overheat and melt. We calculate the exact cable size needed for your cooker's rating and install 6mm² or 10mm² cable accordingly.

Legal
Compliance

New cooker circuits are notifiable under Part P regulations. We provide full certification for Building Control and your home insurance.

Isolation
Switch

Regulations require a 45A cooker control switch within 2 meters of the cooker. We install the switch in the correct position for safety and compliance.

Proper
Testing

We test earth continuity, insulation resistance, and polarity. Your cooker is safe and compliant with BS 7671 (18th Edition) standards.

First electric cooker in your home? We run a dedicated cable from your consumer unit, install the 45A switch, and connect the cooker.

Hob and Oven

Hob & Oven Separate

Modern kitchens often have built-in ovens and separate hobs. We wire both to a single cooker circuit using a dual outlet plate.

Induction Hob

Induction Hob Upgrade

Induction hobs draw high current (7-11kW). We verify your cable can handle it and upgrade to 10mm² if your existing circuit is undersized.

Safety Warning: Cookers Draw Huge Current = Fire Risk

As a former firefighter, I've attended kitchen fires caused by undersized cables overheating behind units. A typical cooker draws 30-40 amps continuously - wrong cable = melted insulation = house fire.

We calculate the exact cable size required (6mm² or 10mm²) based on your cooker's rating and cable run length. No guesswork. No fire risk.

OurCooker Connection Process

From site check to hot oven. Most connections done in 1-3 hours.

Site Check
01

Site Check

We check your cooker's power rating (nameplate) and measure the distance to your consumer unit to calculate the correct cable size.

Circuit Verification
02

Circuit Verification

We verify your existing circuit (if present) can handle the new cooker. If the cable is undersized, we recommend an upgrade or new circuit.

Connection
03

Connection

We connect the cooker to the outlet plate using the correct terminals (L, N, E). For hob + oven combos, we use a dual outlet configuration.

Testing
04

Electric Cooker Installation FAQs

? What cable size do I need for my cooker?

It depends on the cooker's rating and cable length. Up to 11kW and 20m run needs 6mm². Over 11kW or longer runs need 10mm². We calculate this for you.

? Can I use an existing circuit for a new cooker?

Only if the existing cable is rated correctly. If your old cooker was 7kW and the new one is 10kW, you may need a cable upgrade. We check this first.

? Where should the cooker switch be located?

Within 2 meters of the cooker, at a height of 1.35m-1.5m, and not directly above the hob. We position it according to 18th Edition regulations.

? Can I connect the cooker myself?

Legally yes, if you're competent. But you must notify Building Control (££), perform electrical tests, and self-certify. Most homeowners find it easier and safer to hire a qualified electrician.

? Do induction hobs need special wiring?

Induction hobs draw high current (7-11kW). They often need 10mm² cable, especially if the cable run is long. We verify your circuit can handle it.

? What if my consumer unit has no spare ways?

We can install a garage-style consumer unit just for the cooker, or upgrade your main board to a larger unit with more ways. We'll advise the best solution.

? Can you connect separate hob and oven?

Yes. We use a dual outlet plate that splits one cooker circuit into two connections - one for the hob, one for the oven. This is standard in modern kitchens.

? How long does a cooker connection take?

Simple connection to existing outlet: 1 hour. New circuit installation: 2-4 hours depending on cable run and consumer unit location.

? Will you dispose of my old cooker?

We can disconnect it for you. Disposal is usually arranged separately (council bulky waste or appliance recycling), but we can advise on local options.

? Do you provide certification?

Yes. For new circuits, you receive an Electrical Installation Certificate. For connections to existing circuits, a Minor Works Certificate. Both are required for insurance and Building Control.

? How much does cooker installation cost?

Simple connection to existing outlet: £80-£150. New circuit installation: £250-£450 depending on cable run. We quote after assessing your specific setup.

? Do you cover Montrose and Forfar?

Yes. We cover all of Angus including Brechin, Montrose, Forfar, Edzell, Kirriemuir, and surrounding areas.
