100% Brechin Local.

I served as a Retained Firefighter with Brechin Fire Service and a Royal Air Force Electrical Engineer. I have seen firsthand what happens when electrical systems go wrong.

Kitchen fires often start behind units - overloaded sockets, heat damage to cables, water ingress. That's why I don't cut corners on kitchen electrics. Every circuit is properly rated, every cable protected, and every installation certified to BS 7671.

Safety Warning: Kitchen Electrics Behind Units Can Be Deadly

As a former firefighter, I've seen kitchen fires caused by water ingress, heat damage, and overloaded sockets hidden behind units. Out of sight doesn't mean safe.

We install all kitchen circuits with proper IP-rated fittings, heat-resistant cable, and correct load calculations to prevent electrical fires.

Kitchen Electrical FAQs

? What cable do I need for an electric cooker?

It depends on the cooker rating. Up to 7kW needs 6mm², while 7-13kW requires 10mm². We calculate the exact requirement based on your appliance and cable run length.

? Can I have a socket inside a kitchen cupboard?

Generally no. Sockets should be accessible and not enclosed. However, we can install switched fused spurs for hidden appliances like under-sink boilers or waste disposals.

? How many sockets should a modern kitchen have?

We recommend minimum 6 double sockets, plus dedicated outlets for fridge, dishwasher, washing machine, and any island appliances. More is always better.

? Do you install USB sockets?

Yes. We fit double sockets with built-in USB ports (Type A and Type C) - perfect for charging phones and tablets while cooking.

? Can you add power to a kitchen island?

Yes. We either run cable under the floor or through cabinets to provide sockets on your island. Pop-up sockets are popular for a neat finish.

? What is first fix and second fix?

First fix is running cables through walls before the kitchen units are fitted. Second fix is installing sockets, lights, and connecting appliances after the units are in.

? Do I need an electrician for under-cabinet lighting?

Yes. All mains-powered lighting must be installed by a qualified electrician and notified to Building Control. We install LEDs with neat switching and hidden transformers.

? Can you work around my kitchen fitter?

Absolutely. We coordinate with your fitter to do first fix after plastering, then return for second fix once units are installed. We're used to working in sequence.

? How much does a kitchen rewire cost?

It varies by size. A small galley kitchen starts from £800-£1200. A large open-plan kitchen with island, cooker, and lighting can be £2000-£3500. We quote free after seeing plans.

? Do you provide certification?

Yes. Every job is tested and certificated to BS 7671 (18th Edition). You receive an Electrical Installation Certificate for Building Control and insurance.

? Can you install a cooker the same day?

If you have an existing cooker circuit, we can usually connect a new cooker same-day. If you need a new circuit from scratch, it's typically next-day for most Brechin properties.

? Do you cover Forfar and Montrose?

Yes. We cover all of Angus including Forfar, Montrose, Edzell, Laurencekirk, and surrounding areas.
