I served as a Retained Firefighter with Brechin Fire Service and a Royal Air Force Electrical Engineer. I have seen firsthand what happens when electrical systems go wrong.

That's why I don't cut corners on bathroom electrics. Water and electricity is a deadly combination. When I install a shower at your Brechin home, I apply military-grade safety standards and ensure proper RCD protection, correct cable sizing, and IP-rated fittings.

Why Upgrade Your Electric Shower?

Modern electric showers deliver powerful, reliable hot water without relying on your boiler. Here is why Brechin homeowners choose them.

Instant
Hot Water

No waiting for the boiler. Electric showers heat water on demand, so you get hot water instantly even if someone just emptied the tank.

RCD
Protected

Water and electricity is deadly. We install every shower with RCD protection and proper earthing to cut power instantly if there's a fault.

Stable
Temperature

No more scalding or freezing when someone flushes the toilet. Modern showers have thermostatic controls to maintain consistent temperature.

Energy
Efficient

Only heat the water you use. Unlike combi boilers that waste heat in long pipe runs, electric showers are 100% efficient at the point of use.

Understanding Shower Power Ratings

Higher kW = Hotter water + Better flow. Here's the difference.

7.5kW Shower

Basic

Warm in summer, lukewarm in winter

9.5kW Shower

Standard

Good heat + decent flow year-round

10.5kW Shower

Premium

Hot + powerful in all conditions

We recommend: 9.5kW Minimum for Brechin homes

Safety Warning: Water + Electricity = Deadly

As a former firefighter, I've seen the consequences of DIY bathroom electrics. Electric showers MUST have RCD protection, proper IP ratings, and correct earthing.

A faulty shower can kill. We install every unit to BS 7671 (18th Edition) standards with mandatory testing and certification.

Electric Shower Installation FAQs

? What cable size do I need for a 9.5kW shower?

A 9.5kW shower requires 10mm² Twin & Earth cable protected by a 45A MCB. Older 6mm² cable is only suitable for 7.5kW showers and must be upgraded.

? Do I need to upgrade my consumer unit?

Not always. If you have a modern board with RCD protection and spare ways, we can add the shower circuit. For older boards, we may install a dedicated mini consumer unit.

? Can I install an electric shower myself?

No. Electric showers are notifiable to Building Control under Part P regulations. DIY installation is illegal, dangerous, and will void your home insurance.

? How long does installation take?

A straightforward replacement takes 2-3 hours. New installations with cable runs can take 4-6 hours. We always aim to complete in one visit.

? What is a pull cord isolator switch?

It's a ceiling-mounted switch that lets you turn off power to the shower for maintenance. Building regulations require one within the bathroom, usually above the door.

? Will my shower work if the power goes out?

No. Electric showers require mains electricity. However, they'll still work if your boiler fails, making them perfect as a backup system.

? Can you install a shower in an upstairs en-suite?

Yes. We run cables through floor voids and wall cavities to minimize visible cable runs. We can also surface-mount in conduit if required.

? What's the difference between 9.5kW and 10.5kW?

About 10% more heat and flow. In winter, a 10.5kW shower stays hot even when incoming water is freezing. We recommend 10.5kW if your consumer unit can handle it.

? Do I need main bonding for my shower?

Yes. All metal pipes must be earth bonded. We test and upgrade bonding to current 18th Edition standards as part of every installation.

? How much does electric shower installation cost?

Replacing an existing shower starts from £180-£250 (labour only, shower unit extra). New installations with cable runs start from £350-£500 depending on distance.

? What warranty do you provide?

Manufacturer warranties vary (2-5 years). We guarantee our workmanship for 12 months and provide full certification for your records.

? Can you install Mira showers in Montrose?

Yes. We cover Montrose, Edzell, Forfar, and all of Angus. We install Mira, Triton, Aqualisa, and all major brands.
