Security cameras are only useful if they're positioned correctly. DIY installs often have blind spots, glare issues, or poor night vision. I design coverage plans that eliminate blind spots and ensure you can actually identify people at night - not just see blurry shapes.

Remotely

View live feeds from your phone anywhere in the world. Perfect for holiday homes or checking on deliveries when you're at work.

Insurance
Discounts

Many home insurers offer 5-15% discounts for properties with professionally installed CCTV systems. It pays for itself over time.

Professional Coverage Planning

Camera positioning is everything. Here's how we eliminate blind spots.

Essential Camera Positions

  • 1. Front Door - Capture everyone entering/leaving. Mount high to avoid tampering.
  • 2. Driveway/Parking - Record license plates and vehicle activity. Angled for number plate clarity.
  • 3. Back Door/Garden - 80% of burglars enter through rear. Often overlooked by DIY installs.
  • 4. Side Gates - Common access points to gardens. Wide-angle cameras cover multiple entry points.
  • 5. Garage/Outbuildings - Protect tools, bikes, and equipment. Essential in rural Angus.

Common DIY Mistakes

  • Too High: Can't see faces clearly. We mount at 2.5m - 3m for facial recognition.
  • Glare & Reflections: Windows and lights wash out footage. We position to avoid reflections.
  • Poor Night Vision: Cheap IR LEDs create grainy footage. We use starlight cameras for colour night vision.
  • Blind Spots: One camera can't cover everything. We design overlapping coverage zones.
  • WiFi Range: Wireless cameras fail if WiFi is weak. We test signal strength during surveys.

James's Approach: We visit your property, walk the perimeter, and create a coverage plan that eliminates blind spots. You'll see exactly where each camera will be mounted before we start work.

Home CCTV Installation FAQs

? PoE vs Wireless: Which is better?

PoE (Power over Ethernet) is more reliable - one cable provides power and data. Wireless is easier to install but depends on WiFi strength. For permanent homes, we recommend PoE.

? How much storage do I need?

A 4-camera system recording 24/7 at 1080p needs about 1TB per month. We typically install 2-4TB NVRs so you have 2-4 months of footage before it loops.

? Can I view footage remotely?

Yes. All systems we install include remote viewing via phone apps. You can watch live feeds and download clips from anywhere with internet access.

? What about GDPR and privacy laws?

You cannot record public spaces or neighbours' properties. We position cameras to only capture your property. Signs warning of CCTV are recommended but not legally required for homes.

? How good is night vision?

We use starlight cameras with colour night vision up to 30m. Cheap cameras use IR LEDs which produce grainy black-and-white footage - useless for identifying people.

? Do I need planning permission?

Usually no for homes. CCTV is permitted development. However, if you're in a conservation area or listed building, check with Angus Council first.

? What resolution should I get?

We recommend 4MP minimum (2560x1440). 4K (8MP) is better for identifying faces at distance. Avoid 1080p for new installs - it's outdated.

? Can cameras be hacked?

Only if you use default passwords. We change all passwords during installation and recommend keeping firmware updated. PoE systems on isolated networks are most secure.

? How long do cameras last?

Quality cameras last 5-10 years outdoors. We install IP66-rated weatherproof cameras designed for Scottish weather. Cheap cameras fail within 1-2 years.

? Can I add more cameras later?

Yes. We install NVRs with spare channels. A 4-camera system typically uses an 8-channel NVR so you can add 4 more cameras later without replacing equipment.

? Do I need professional monitoring?

Not required. Most homeowners use CCTV for evidence and deterrence. Professional monitoring (alarm response) is optional and costs £15-30/month.

? What happens if the power goes out?

NVRs continue recording during brief power cuts (built-in battery). For long outages, we can install UPS backup systems to keep cameras running for several hours.
